Changes in Water Regulations

California Statewide General Waste Discharge Requirements will impose increased monitoring of specific contaminant levels in wastewater. New wells are expensive and subject to permit requirements. There is no guarantee that new wells will be allowed.

Land application and ponds require considerable acreage that may be better suited for other uses. Upgrading LAA water to irrigate grapes reduces expense and ensures quality fruit.

Tightening water supply will result in greater regulatory control. Staying ahead of wastewater requirements and usage allowances will provide benefits in the not-so-distant future.

Tier Structure

  1. Permit based on PW generation that is discharged from the winery; wine production estimates are for reference. If stormwater is commingled, it should be included in PW generation volume. Can be based on actual flow meter measurements or calculated using an accurate alternative method. Needs to include any stormwater diverted to PW system.
  2. Assumes 5 gallons of PW generated per gall on of wine produced
  3. Approximated based on 2.4-gallon case equivalent
  4. Exempt facilities are not required to enroll in the General Order
